Lillian Bassman...
one of the preeminent fashion photographers of the
2oth Century has died at 94 years of age.
In the 1970s Lillian Bassman was one of the most
significant fashion photographers.
Her most important pictures were taken in the
late 1940s through to the early 1960s.
During the late 1970s she discarded 40 years of negatives
and prints...her life's work.
Twenty years later at a forgotten bag filled with hundreds of
her images was discovered and her photographic work
began to be appreciated again.
For me...the photography of the exceptionally brilliant
Lillian Bassman is mesmerizing...
In an extract from The Los Angeles Times
she said:
"Elegance goes back to the earliest paintings.
Long necks. The thrust of the head in a certain position."
The Los Angeles Times
said of her work:
"Her 'thing' it turns out, was the elegance of women.
It was that aspect of femininity that
became her source of inspiration."
Such timeless elegance and beauty...
